Hydrolates (hydrosols) are formed during the distillation of plants to produce essential oils. After separation of the essential oil, an aqueous phase, hydrolate, remains, which contains small concentrations of essential oil and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) obtained from the vapor phase and then cooled.Traditionally, hydrolate has been considered a waste product with no economic value in distillation to produce essential oils. The hydrolate phase has often simply been discharged into the sewer and not utilized.However, interest in hydrolates has increased significantly in recent years, for use in aromatherapy, skin care, perfume & cosmetics and for use in food.

True hydrolates cannot be produced synthetically but is only obtained through the distillation of aromatic plants. Nor can true hydrosol be obtained by mixing essential oil with an aqueous phase.

Agronova only produces genuine hydrolates through distillation of cultivated aromatic plants and wild species gathered from Agronova's land holding in MidSweden close to the Baltic Sea and the High Coast World Heritage area.
